Step 5: WHAT WE DO NOT FUND
The S. H. Cowell Foundation is a private foundation under California and U. S. law. We only accept grant proposals from nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and K-12 public schools. With very few exceptions, grants are restricted to projects that directly benefit children and families residing in Northern and Central California.
We usually do not fund:
Individuals
- Projects that benefit specific individuals
- Projects restricted to people with specific medical, physical, or health conditions
The following types of programs/projects/groups
- Academic or medical research
- Daycare centers
- Drug or alcohol abuse programs
- Environmental or conservation programs
- Health clinics or other medical service projects
- Population programs
- Post-secondary education
- Projects that are the responsibility of government agencies (except for school districts)
- Sectarian, politically partisan, or religious projects
The following types of activities
- Books, films, or videos
- Political lobbying
- Special events and conferences
Facilities/Operations
- Capital requests when less than 50 percent of the total funds have been raised
- Ongoing general operating support
