Annenberg Institute for School Reform A think-tank and clearinghouse that offers a searchable database of Tools for School Improvement and provocative ideas about “Smart Education Systems” that root education reform in a broader framework of community renewal and political will.
Center for Applied Linguistics A national resource for research on language and learning, and the publisher of the National Literacy Panel Report on Language Minority Children and Youth, an important synthesis of research on English Learners. Also hosts the National Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners.
Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning Tracks and evaluates the development of California’s teacher workforce; among its recent publications is Listening to Teachers of English Language Learners, a revealing state-wide survey.
Consortium on Chicago School Research Though focused on Chicago, offers insights with wide application, including important papers on Instructional Program Coherence: Benefits and Challenges and Essential Supports for School Improvement.
EdSource The primary clearinghouse for information on California education policy, finance, enrollment and performance, and offers a provocative two-year study of unusually effective California elementary schools: Similar Students, Different Results.
Harvard Education Letter A newsletter for teachers and administrators that offers syntheses of research on issues that affect school performance, as well as thoughtful essays such as Richard Elmore’s The Limits of Change (2002) and Elmore and Elizabeth City's The Road to School Improvement (2007).
Hayward Unified School District A K-12 district in the San Francisco Bay Area and a Cowell grantee that offers an exemplary Master Plan for English Learners.
Institute for Research on Education Policy and Practice at Stanford University Host site for the 2007 "Getting Down to Facts" study papers on California public education.
Long Beach Unified School District Consistently among America's highest-performing large school districts, the 2003 winner of the Broad Prize for Urban Education became in 2007 the first honored district to be selected again as a finalist for the national award.
Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning The federal regional educational laboratory in Denver. Has developed a distinctive line of research on principal and superintendent leadership, including School Leadership that Works and The Balanced Leadership Framework.
New Teacher Center (NTC) Located at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Cowell grantee, NTC is the nation’s premier resource for the induction, formative assessment and professional development of novice teachers.
Phi Delta Kappan A premier professional journal for educators. A notable article is Michael Fullan’s The Three Stories of Education Reform, published in April 2000.
Springboard Schools A reform-support organization and recent Cowell grantee that facilitates a systemic, inquiry-based approach to school and school-district improvement. Offers "Best Practices" research reports on California elementary, middle and high schools.
University of California Language Minority Research Institute A multi-campus consortium for research on language learning and English Learners. Offers a comprehensive, searchable database of published studies.
WestEd The federal regional education laboratory in San Francisco. A source for new research and technical assistance on many important issues, and offers the authoritative Evaluation of the Implementation of California Proposition 227 (year 5 report), a comprehensive look at instructional programs for English Learners.
