Mission
The mission of the S.H. Cowell Foundation is to improve the quality of life of children living in poverty in Northern and Central California by providing support that strengthens families and communities.

Vision
We envision towns and neighborhoods across Northern and Central California where people strive together to build and sustain strong communities — places that are mobilized to support low-income children and their families and to expand their life opportunities.

Most important to us is the quality of the relationships and connections among the people and organizations within a community. In deciding where to make grants, we look for towns or neighborhoods where youth, residents, public and nonprofit service providers, educators, and civic leaders are working together to improve the quality of life of low-income children and families.

Values
  • Rigor — We have high expectations for ourselves and for our grantees, holding everyone accountable in an atmosphere of inquiry and discipline.
  • Directness — We are explicit about our intentions and our results, and we expect the same of our grantees.
  • Inclusion — We seek appropriate solutions and shared responsibility among a broad group of community leaders.
  • Connections — We endeavor to develop strong and lasting relationships with partners.
  • Leadership — We encourage personal and professional growth and offer ongoing development opportunities for our grantees.
  • Knowledge — We take time to deeply explore and understand the communities we serve in order to enrich and inform our decision-making.
